A major new report on 'The Route to the highway systems of the future' by the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport (ADEPT), has highlighted that Local Authorities need to take a proactive approach on smart highways to avoid falling behind in digital innovation.

The report suggests that in order for game-changing digital innovation to be applied on the strategic road network (SRN) and large smart cities, Councils must have a structured approach alongside their local partners to develop a holistic system for knowledge sharing and scale-up. Moving away from the current piecemeal and opportunistic innovation processes that currently take place, this structured approach will ensure that councils and road networks specialists alike have a sustainable model for long-term benefit.
