John Fox – Managing Director, Lucy Zodion

John left Cambridge University with an engineering degree in the early 1980s, joining Thorn-EMI on a graduate training scheme. John remained with Thorn for a number of years before leaving to join a specialist lighting company as an electronics engineer; this company was acquired by increasingly larger groups until it became part of Thomas & Betts in the late 1990s. 
During this period John held a number of roles in the commercial interior lighting sector, including technical manager and technical director. He became increasingly involved in industry committees such as the Lighting Industry Federation, and both national and international lighting standards drafting bodies, like the International Electrotechnical Commission and the European Committee for Standardisation. 

Niraj Saraf – Head of Innovation for Sustainable Urban Living, Innovate UK

Niraj is a Lead Technologist for Urban Living with Innovate UK. Niraj has had a varied career, with roles in the Civil Service, banking, international development, entrepreneurship, and management consultancy. As a strategist and innovator, he is passionate about sustainability.
Prior to joining Innovate UK, Niraj worked as a faculty member for strategy and innovation at Ashridge Business School. He holds an MBA from Imperial College, specialising in innovation and entrepreneurship, and is also currently studying for a Masters degree in Sustainability and Responsibility. While Niraj is excited by technological innovation, he is also concerned that human and social factors that are at the heart of implementation and believes in a design approach to innovation.

The breakfast briefing is designed for anyone who is interested in smart cities, including local government smart city project teams and those with responsibility for infrastructure or service delivery.

We’ll be meeting to discuss the future of our cities and reveal the findings of new research into progress and attitudes towards smart cities from local governments across Britain. With speakers from both Innovate UK and Lucy Zodion, we’re anticipating an informed, in-depth smart city debate. It’s time for you to prepare your most pressing smart city questions for the experts!
